Odd Time Licks: Vol.2 7/8

Back by popular demand, world renowned guitarist Guthrie Govan continues with his popular 20 licks series on guiding you through some of his favourite odd time signatures. Guthrie's 20 licks will finally lift the veil on odd time soloing and help you to play creatively and comfortably over any 7/8 groove!

These licks are designed to inspire and encourage you to get more familiar with what a bar of 7 feels like. It's often the case that players are quite wary about playing over any time signature that has a bigger number than 4 on top. Guthrie wanted to encourage people to conquer that fear and feel just as 'at home' in 7, as they would in more popular time signatures such as 3/4 and 4/4.

Guthrie's intention here was to keep his harmonic approach very focused allowing the rhythmic aspect of his licks to shine through over the odd time track. Guthrie says 'My main priority when coming up with these 20 licks was just to go for rhythmic emphasis and to give you ideas of how you can phrase within that time signature rather than throwing any complex harmonic ideas at you. It seemed to me that it was better just to focus on one aspect of the music at a time, so harmonically it's very simple, and rhythmically you're free to explore using some of the ideas in these licks just as guidelines'.

By watching and listening to Guthrie playing his licks over this odd time groove, and by studying the accurate TAB/Notation/lick notes, you will learn a great deal from Guthrie about the different ways in which you could phrase your own lines over these odd time grooves. Once you've got the hang of Guthrie's licks it's time to start creating your own!
