Hi there, and welcome to my new JTC package. I’m going to show you 20 phrases which I have used in my songs, both released and unreleased tracks. These are all original ideas, and I hope you can use them to develop and inspire your own playing.
These phrases incorporate a wide array of techniques. Some are relatively straightforward to learn while some require harder work. Once you get used to them, try playing through the phrases as part of your practice routine. Spending a few minutes working on just a couple of phrases every day, gradually building up the speed, would be very beneficial. It works for me!
For all examples, I’m tuned a semitone below standard (Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb, or D# G# C# F# A# D#). As with all JTC tab, this doesn’t affect the chord names or the standard notation display. We just treat the guitar as a “transposing instrument” (like the trumpet or saxophone) – the good old open C major chord is still notated as C, even though the sound is B.
I’m a recent convert to drop-tuning. The tone sounds deep and full in many cases and it serves my songs really well. I ended up tuning all my guitars down a half step. It’s only a subtle change, but I really love how it sounds and feels. I wish you could feel the same joy as I feel when I play these fun licks! |
